5 Reasons Why Using Gift of Travel’s Travel as a Fundraiser is a Good Thing….

Even small donations help with BIG things!

1)  Our non-profit partners need every bit of support they can get, including yours. If just by using our on-line booking tools to book your hotel stay or vacation helps a non-profit, JUST DO IT!!

2) SMALL DONATIONS ADD UP!!  You’d be surprised at how often we hear the phrase “It just doesn’t seem like a small contribution from my 1 night hotel stay can make a difference.”   Our give back from even just 1 night hotel stay helps our charities.  Even small donations seem large if you’re a small organization.  Your travel can help!  If everyone who thought this had just used our Travel as a Fundraiser tool, many small contributions would add up to a large donation for our non-profit partners.

3)  SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING:  It is so easy to use our online booking tools to book your hotel stays or your car reservations through our Travelocity Partner Network Program.  If you can help a non-profit just by booking your hotel stay, why wouldn’t you?  If you’re worried that a small donation won’t help as much as you’d like, will sending no donation help more?

 4)  YOUR VACATION MEANS A DONATION!  The same goes with your vacation… are you taking your family to Hawaii or on a ski trip for spring break?  Why not book it through our vacation program through Apple Vacations and know that while you are enjoying your vacation your are also helping a non-profit or charity…  at no extra cost to you!!

5)  IF TRAVEL IS SOMETHING YOU DO ANYWAY, FOR WORK OR FOR PLEASURE than you can help one of Gift of Travel’s non-profit partners just by doing what you do!!  It’s so easy to make a difference!

It IS so easy to make a difference and every little bit helps.  Gift of Travel “gives back” to our non-profit partners and wants you to help.  Please use our Travel as a Fundraiser program to book your travel and let your hotel stay or vacation make a donation!!

Gift of Travel helps our non-profit partners such as Breast Cancer Fund, Dining for Women, InnVision the Way Home, Ag Against Hunger, the Marine Mammal Center, Little Smiles, Wounded Warrior Project, Pop Warner, Save Our Shores and many others!  Our travel partners are Travelocity Partner Network, Apple Vacations, AmaWaterways and Wildland Adventures.   If you know of or support a charity that can benefit through our Travel as a Fundraiser program, please let us know!

Little Princes by Conar Grennan of Next Generation Nepal

February 14th, 2011

I just finished reading Little Princes by Conrr Grennan of Next Generation Nepal.

http://www.nextgenerationnepal.org/

Although NGN is not (yet :) ) one of Gift of Travel’s non-profit partners in our Travel as a Fundraiser program, I wanted to mention this book because it is truly an inspiring and wonderful read.

Conor Grennan goes to Nepal to volunteer in an orphanage to “impress people” (his own admission!) but what he finds there changes his life forever.  Here is a man whose journey not only rocked his world but changed how he choose to live it.

I highly recommend this book!!!

Really great ideas for helping charities simply by “what you do”

February 8th, 2011

Like Gift of Travel’s  Travel As a Fundraiser™ program, there are many other opportunities to help charity simply by “what you do”, and they don’t necessarily involve spending any extra money — or spending a lot of money.

Here are a few that I really like….  unique fundraising ideas that incorporate your daily living — or things you do anyway  (like travel and excercise)  and give back to charities without costing you an arm and a leg or requiring you write a separate donation check!

  1. Gift of Travel’s  Travel As a Fundraiser™ program — of course I’m going to list this first!!  If you travel for business and need to stay in a hotel, simply by booking your travel through Gift of Travel you are helping a charity.  If you need a hotel for a personal getaway or want a vacation vacation, book through Gift of Travel!  We donate 4% of the cost of your hotel stay or your vacation package to the  non-profit charities that have partnered with us.  www.giftotravel.com/partners/
  2. My Shirt Helps  at myshirthelps.com — a fun and cool collection of t-shirts for $20.  They make great gifts and half the cost goes to help support the non-profit for which the shirt was made.  They have kids shirts too!
  3. Plus 3 Network   plus3network.org   Just log in your excercise and you are helping a charity!! YES — just take a few moments after your workout to log your workout on this site and a donation is made to the charity of your choosing by a corporate sponsor.  How cool is that?
  4. Hotels that Help  hotelsthathelp.org   Works with hotels to help them incorporate giving programs to a local charity of their choice by adding $1/night to their guests hotel bills!  What an easy way to give!!

Think about this — you could get up and go for a run and log your miles…DONATION!!  Then you need to travel for work (or pleasure) so you book your hotel through Gift of  Travel and you choose a hotel that participates in Hotels That Help  DOUBLE DONATION!!!  You have to buy a birthday gift for your nephew so you choose a cute kids t-shirt through My Shirt Helps… DONATION!!!

WOW — what an AWESOME giving back kind of day you’ve had!  CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Hawaii… a GREAT destination and your vacation means a donation!

February 7th, 2011

Waikiki has it all!

Hawaii is an amazing and diverse collection of islands in the South Pacific.  If you want a fabulous getaway, family vacation or honeymoon with an opportunity for Polynesian Culture, white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, adventure and activities, gourmet restaurants and more, then Hawaii is for you!  Each island offers a different atmosphere and different opportunities.  If you have the time to visit more than one island, you should!  We recommend at least 4 nights on each island, which islands you pick is up to you!

Just remember…when you book your travel to Hawaii  through Gift of Travel and our Travel as a Fundraiser program, we will donate 4% of the cost of your vacation back to one of our non-profit partners!  If you want to choose one of our partner charities, click here

A little more info. about Hawaii…

Clothing:  The islands of Hawaii each have many different climates – including snow!  Consider what activities you plan to enjoy, then pack (fleece jacket if going to Haleakaka, sturdy hiking shoes if hiking on the lava fields).   There are many useful guidebooks that offer in depth information on various activities and what to wear.  Overall dress is “aloha wear”.  Be casual. You do not need to bring a suit, dress slacks, or fancy cloths (unless you want to!)

Weather, Water and Sun: October to May the temperature averages mid 80’s during the day and mid 60’s to mid 70’s at night  (light jackets or sweaters are recommended for the evening).  These months see more rain but unless there is a weather system, the rain doesn’t usually last long.  May to October averages mid to high 80’s during the day and mid 70’s at night.   The year-round average water temperature is a warm 74 degrees.   The sun is very, very strong.   Waterproof sunscreen with maximum protection is essential.

Hotels, be sure to ask:  Many hotels offer discounts for honeymooners or extended stays.  They may also offer room upgrades or amenities for honeymooners.  Just because a hotel is on a beach does not mean it’s on a “swimmable”  beach.  What does “partial” ocean view really mean?  Is there a charge for parking?  Is there a “daily activity fee”?

Time and Money:  Hawaii does not observe daylight savings time. During the Spring and Summer months, when the clock is turned ahead, Hawaii is 6 hours behind Eastern Standard Time (EST), 3 hours behind Pacific Standard Time (PST).

The islands have many banks and ATM’s.   We do recommend traveling with more than one ATM or credit card in case something happens to your primary card.  Check with your bank before you go about fees they may charge for using your ATM out of network.

Common Sense and Need to Know:  Do NOT leave valuables in your rental car, on your beach blanket, or loose in your hotel. Use the safe in your hotel room if you must bring valuables that you won’t be carrying on you.  If renting a convertible is a MUST (which we think it is!) rent a convertible with a lockable trunk.

Be sure to ask about discounts when booking activities (AAA, military)  and do book the most popular activities in advance.  Research and read up on vendors and talk with them directly before you arrive.  Beware of special deals where you get a free dinner or activity if you go to a time share presentation. Although you may actually get a free dinner, what’s the point?  Your time in the islands is so limited, use it wisely!

Car Rental and Driving:  The islands are easy to get around on – and with the exception of Honolulu, you will need a rental car.  There are major roadways that will take you along beautiful coastlines, to waterfalls, through rainforests, and even to a live volcano! If you are under 25, do check with the rental agency about their policies.  Auto insurance is a must.  Be sure to check with your auto insurance policy and your credit card about what, if any, protection they offer before you leave.

Raw cocoa beans

I took one of the raw cocoa beans from the shell in our guide’s hand and sucked it as she said children do, for the sweetness. But the large white bean was slimy and tasted nothing like the chocolate I knew.  It was a long way from being ready for consumption—a process that involves drying, stomping, crushing, and drying again, eventually resulting in a chocolate powder or log that can be grated and used in recipes.

We were touring Morne Cubaril Estate, the oldest plantation on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, which still raises cocoa beans, coconuts, and sugar cane. This was the noon stop on our all-day tour and the place we would be served a sumptuous Creole buffet lunch.  But first we sampled fresh coconut meat and coconut candy and drank coconut water (sweet and thin).  We sipped juice from sugar cane, squeezed out by a donkey working an old-fashioned sugar mill—all of which made us appreciate the pork and chicken meal even more.
Overlooking scenic Marigot Bay
This was our first visit to St. Lucia, and we hoped to discover why it’s considered one of the most beautiful and romantic Caribbean Islands. So we booked an all-day shore excursion from the Emerald Princess cruise ship to get a good look at this lush volcanic island.  From a steaming crater to golden sand and green rainforests, the views were stunning at all points.
Some say Christopher Columbus discovered St. Lucia, but it hasn’t been proven.  Regardless, it was fought over by the British and French–changing hands and rulers14 times before the island was ceded to Britain in 1814. But French influence remains strong—a broken French dialect is very prominent, and the staccato cadence is quite difficult to understand even though English is the official language.
Poinsettias bloom half the year
Our tour started in the capital city of Castries, the busiest and most efficient port in the Eastern Caribbean. From the north side of the island we traveled west, viewing abundant fields growing grapefruit, sour and sweet oranges, golden apples, limes, coconut, and bananas.
Open air market at Anse La Raye
A high point overlooked Marigot Bay, a beautiful location featured in several movies.  We passed Rosa Valley, the largest banana plantation on the island, and drove through six small fishing villages. The first, Anse La Raye, has a large West Indian influence.  While checking out the scenery, I ventured into the open air market and bought a set of lacquered bamboo baskets. Homes in Canaries, another fishing village, are colorfully painted red, yellow, blue, green, and pink—matching the bountiful blooms on the island.
Magnificent Pitons on the water’s edge
We passed damage on roads and bridges wrought by Hurricane Thomas in October 2010 as we headed east toward the rain forest, a tangled mass of thick green vegetation. Bougainvilla in pink, purple, and orange grew wild.  Giant ferns up to 25 feet high hung over the road like umbrellas. Many hairpin curves, steep inclines and declines kept us swaying from side to side in the mini-bus as we motored toward the historic coastal town of Soufriere (Sou-fray).
Suddenly, the dramatic Pitons or Twin Peaks, appeared to rise up from the water’s edge.  Although they aren’t the highest points on the island, they are the most photographed sight in the Caribbean.
Mineral water is said to
have healing properties
Three centuries ago the volcano imploded and left a caldera around the area.  Three pools of simmering muddy water have been bubbling from the barren earth ever since, spewing clouds of steam 50 feet into the air. At the volcano’s edge we walked down slippery steps for a better view of the waterfall’s sparkling cascade and mineral pool.  Public therapeutic bathing is allowed in the 80 degree water.  A strong sulphur smell hangs in the air from gases being released.
Back at Souffiere we boarded a catamaran for sailing to a beach.  Swimming in pleasantly warm water and drinking multiple cups of rum punch convinced us that St. Lucia is truly an island paradise.

ABOUT WILDLAND ADVENTURES

Feel The Difference Authenticity Makes
At Wildland Adventures, authenticity is our highest priority. Sincerity, good faith, genuineness – they’re all part of the ethic we embrace in approaching our world and the people and cultures we share it with. We’re devoted to helping our travelers experience the world with the honesty and affirmation that your choice of Wildland Adventures implies — a real world without artifice, that craves our understanding and compassion rather than our judgment; a world that seeks to welcome us rather than entertain us.

Of course, it can be argued that authenticity is an unattainable goal in travel. Our presence will forever change the place and the people with whom we come in contact. But if authenticity is characterized, according to its definitions, by “freedom from hypocrisy and pretense,” then Wildland Adventures can proceed with the confidence that our trips not only will strengthen our own humanity, but will help build the kind of inter-cultural, interpersonal and environmental bonds that enhance rather than exploit the people and places where we travel.

An Interview with Nancy Williams, Founder of Gift of Travel

January 26th, 2011

Nancy Williams started Gift of Travel and the Travel as a Fundraiser program in 2009 after selling her online travel company of 15 years, HoneyLuna, the Honeymoon Registry Service.

Nancy founded and was the driving force behind HoneyLuna, a company that continues to provide honeymoon couples with an opportunity to register for the items and activities of their honeymoons as wedding gifts. Nancy essentially pioneered the online honeymoon registry market. HoneyLuna’s honeymoon registry concept was written about in publications like Alaska Airlines Magazine, Time, Newsweek and Condé Nast Traveler.

After selling HoneyLuna, Nancy gave serious thought to what she loved doing and where she could channel her energy. An avid traveler and Master SCUBA diver herself, Nancy has traveled the world for both business and personal travel. She also has traveled to Cambodia to help support an organization that brings fresh water wells to villages. Nancy has always been involved in raising money for different organizations and volunteering her time for several non-profits. What she realized was that the organizations she was working so hard to support were really hurting financially. Thinking about her passions and her experience, she hit upon the idea for her business — combining travel with fundraising.

Gift of Travel provides non-profits an additional revenue stream by using the force of consumerism. Gift of Travel takes a product consumers were likely to purchase anyway, a vacation, to generate a donation to a non-profit at no extra cost to the consumer.

Non-profits of any size, from small private schools to large national organizations can benefit from the Travel as a Fundraiser program. Given the drop in donations to non-profits and cuts in government programs, Nancy believes the time has come for Gift of Travel’s Travel as a Fundraiser program.

Nancy Williams has written articles for Entrepreneur PR and other travel and wedding planning publications. In addition, she was asked to present Gift of Travel and to the Carl Wilken’s Fellows of the Genocide Intervention Network.

What are you working on right now?

I keep a very full calendar growing my new business, Gift of Travel. I am always learning about, and am in contact with, non-profits throughout the country to engage them in our Travel as a Fundraiser  program. I LOVE learning about all the amazing non-profits that are out there and the passionate people who founded them.  My passion, however, is helping non-profits, especially those close to my heart. We have created the Gift of Travel Foundation and donate 10 percent of our profits to our foundation. I volunteer one full day a week or more with the Marine Mammal Center, rescuing and helping to rehabilitate sick and injured marine mammals such as California Sea Lions, Elephant Seals, Harbor Seals and otters. I am also a Sanctuary Steward for Save Our Shores, helping to protect and preserve the Monterey Bay Sanctuary and educate the public about protecting our beaches and oceans. Finally, my newest “fun” project is learning to surf!

3 trends that excite you?

There are two very important trends in the non-profit world right now that excite me. The first is the consolidation/coming together of non-profits that provide similar services. While each individual non-profit is unique, many overlap producing redundancy in services and expenses.

The second is the growth of passive fundraising opportunities — many supporters of non-profits are experiencing “donor fatigue” and are tired of opening their check books for yet another pledge drive or to write another check. Using products consumers buy anyway to raise funds is an exciting opportunity. Travel is a larger dollar value product that can produce a significant revenue stream for a non-profit. That it is a “passive” fundraiser will help us immensely as more and more non-profits are seeking easy to use fundraising tools to help create new revenue streams.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I am an action jackson. If I have it in my mind to do something, it gets done. It’s really that simple. My process though is first talking about the idea with trusted friends, family members and business associates. Talking about it gives it life. I then create a “vision board” using photos and images that show the “end result” of my idea or project. Seeing it on a board as it will be is the best way to motivate me to the next step. Both HoneyLuna and now Gift of Travel were boot strapped. So I plan out what I can do immediately (create a Web presence, submit press releases) and what I need to do longer term (bring on clients, generate revenue) and write out my goals for the next three months, six months, one year and five years. I start each day with a run on the beach, yoga or surfing to energize myself and bring gratitude to the forefront of my mind. I also look at my vision board and set my intentions to keep myself inspired each and every day.

What is one mistake you’ve made that our readers can learn from?

Every day is a learning process, and I have “learning experiences” each day. Looking back at HoneyLuna, there were three key things I learned from:

1. When I received my first round of investment capital I was terrified, inexperienced and overwhelmed. I relied too much on what “advisors” told me to do and didn’t work hard enough to negotiate a better deal with the investor. I felt I “should” just take what they offered and did. Consequently, although I received the investment and ultimately things worked out, there were several things that were not in my best interest — both personally and professionally. Now I know I need to educate myself more and be confident with my own knowledge and instinct and to negotiate if something doesn’t feel comfortable.

2. I do believe in bootstrapping and passion — and at times entrepreneurs do use credit cards to fund a new business — which I did. However, do NOT burden yourself with a high interest credit card and put a large amount of charges on it. It becomes nearly impossible to dig yourself out, and the money you pay to interest could be going back into your business

3. Do not start a business with your husband (now my ex)!

What is one book and one tool that helps you bring ideas to life?

A must read is “The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Business Don’t Work and What to Do About It” by Michael Gerber. The software I rely on every day is my CRM — there is a great FREE CRM for up to three users through www.zoho.com. Not only does this track all my prospects and clients, it creates my daily to do, which keeps me organized and on top of things.

Why are you so passionate about supporting the non-profit community, and why should others become more involved in helping the non-profit community as well?

Most non-profits serve to fill a need in a segment of society or about a specific objective that is underserved. If we took care of ourselves, of children, of our environment, for example, non-profits wouldn’t exist. I’ve come across non-profits that serve abused women, bring fresh water to villages that have lacked access to clean drinking water, that help feed children … I give gratitude each and every day that those have never been my circumstances — but at the same time I’m very aware that by the grace of a higher power I could be in those circumstances. I could be a child in Cambodia that fell victim to a land mine while playing in a field. I could be an unemployed person who lost everything and is now homeless. I could be uneducated and trapped in a cycle of gang violence with no hope for my future. Any one of us could be — so I am passionate about sharing this awareness with others so that they too can reach out and help those less fortunate. It really doesn’t take much to help others — and to help others such as the non-profits who can do so much more. People can have a tendency to be materialistic and egocentric — but if we all look outside ourselves just a bit and give just a little, we can really make a difference.

How do you stay balanced and grounded?

Balance is so important. Taking time to nurture yourself through things you love and self-care is critical and part of my daily life. Yoga, running, meditation, spending time with my wonderful mate, travel, learning … it’s all just as important, if not more so, than my work. Without happiness and joy from within, eventually we feel empty and burned out. People laugh at me, but I am also a very “go to bed early” girl — I must have 8-plus hours of sleep a night!
