Gift of Travel’s Travel as a Fundraiser partner, AgAgainst Hunger, kicks off it’s “gleaning season”.

About Ag Against Hunger

Over 50 local growers and shippers call Ag Against Hunger when there is a surplus of produce. Surplus can happen for a variety of reasons, such as the demand declining for a certain product. That’s when growers and shippers call Ag Against Hunger! They send their trucks to pick-up the growers’ surplus produce. Every month from April though November, Ag Against Hunger receives approximately 1.2 million pounds of produce. To see a list of their produce donators, visit their
2010 donor
page.

After a commercial harvest, there is still an abundance of produce left in the fields. Every other Saturday, AAH volunteers collect this produce to give to food banks! Learn more on their glean page.

Surplus Produce in the Fields
After a commercial harvest, there is still an abundance of produce
left in the fields. This produce cannot be harvested commercially for a variety of reasons such as the market declining. However, this produce is still grocery store quality.

What is Gleaning?
Ag Against Hunger organizes a group of volunteers to harvest
(glean) what’s left in fields in the Tri-County area.
Our volunteers glean high-quality produce that would otherwise
be tilled back into the soil.

When Does Gleaning Occur?
April through November.
Download a schedule here.

Who Can Glean?
Volunteers are all ages, all sizes! Families, retirees and students
fulfilling community service hours can participate.
Children five and up are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Why Glean?
Volunteers help feed low-income, hungry people.
While enjoying outdoor activity, volunteers will also gain hands-
on farming experience.

How Long Does it Take?
Volunteers generally commit three hours including transportation
to and from the field.
Volunteers meet at 9:00 am (except when otherwise noted) at a designated meeting spot, dependant on field location. From the cooler we caravan to the designated field.

What Do I Need to Bring?
Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes.
We recommend a hat, sunscreen and a bag to take home fresh-
picked produce. Buy an Ag Against Hunger hat, shirt or tote bag here.
No jewelry is allowed in the fields due to food safety regulations.

‘Dining for Women’ and Engaged Giving: Thinking Beyond Checkbook Philanthropy

April 12th, 2011

Here is a great link to article by Michaela Haas and the Huffington Post  on one of our Gift of Travel Partner’s Dining for Women:  ‘Dining for Women’ and Engaged Giving: Thinking Beyond Checkbook Philanthropy

Gift of Travel and our Travel as a Fundraiser program has long advocated thinking beyond checkbook philanthropy.  It is important to engage donors beyond the traditional campaigns and offer than many different types of ways to contribute to a program’s fundraising success without having to always “write another check”.

Haas writes  “Traditional “checkbook philanthropy” relies on the tried and true methods still successfully employed by thousands of nonprofit organizations, namely simple appeals for cash. Yet the advent of social media combined with emergence of a truly concerned global citizenry has created a new, only recently tapped market for nonprofits….  One of the most successful and innovative forms of engaged giving is Dining for Women (DFW), a national dinner giving circle that empowers women and girls living in extreme poverty in the developing world….The entire model is bursting with engagement and creativity, which lies at the heart of DFW’s success.”

How to Convert One-time or Annual Donors into Monthly Givers

April 6th, 2011

Fundraising is always a challenge for our non-profit partners. Gift of Travel’s Travel as a Fundraiser program is just one of the ways to help your non-profit raise funds.

Following are some useful trips from our friends at Network for Good on converting donors to monthly giviers!

“Thinking about monthly giving is one of the smartest things you can do as a fundraiser. At Network for Good, we find that 30-40% of the donation volume for a nonprofit website is monthly giving, and that would be a great situation to find all nonprofits in-thanking people every month instead of asking them for donations every few weeks.

How do you do that? How do you turn your annual givers into monthly supporters?

  1. Make sure your donation form asks what type of gift the donor wants to make (“Do you want to give us a monthly gift?”). Whenever you’re asking for money, ask for the monthly pledge, not just a one-time gift.
  2. Revisit the language you’re using in your appeals. Frame your ask in such a way that it’s a win-win situation-monthly donations for you, convenience and budgeting for your donors. (Read more about the four parts of a great fundraising appeal.)
  3. Package the appeal in an exciting way. For example, some organizations have an ambassador program or a sponsor-a-child every month program. Put a face on that sustainable gift. This way you’re creating some tangible tie to the idea of giving every month. Remember: To increase charitable donations, you should appeal to the heart–not the head.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for a monthly gift of support after someone completes a one-time transaction. It can be ingrained as a nice thank-you message: “Thank you so much for making a one-time gift. This is how you can put your support to work for us each and every month. Would you consider becoming a monthly supporter?” We’ve seen great success in converting first-time online donors into monthly donors by doing that within the first three days of them making their first online gift.

**We’ve seen great success in converting first-time online donors into monthly donors by doing this within the first three days of the donors making their first online gift. Think of using this strategy during the holidays when you’re experiencing high traffic of one-time gift donations!

Have a dream honeymoon and help a charity at the same time!

March 7th, 2011

Book your honeymoon through Gift of Travel and help a charity at the same time!

Are you planning a honeymoon — or know someone who is? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the honeymoon of your dreams and help a charity at the same time? Simply by booking your honeymoon through Gift of Travel and our Travel as a Fundraiser program, you can have the perfect honeymoon and feel good too!

Not sure where you want to go on your honeymoon? Gift of Travel  offers some advice on choosing the honeymoon destination that’s perfect for you.

It’s a big world, after all! And there are so many places that sound wonderful for your honeymoon. And it is the trip of a lifetime right? How do you decide where to go on your honeymoon?

It may seem obvious, but the first step in planning a trip is deciding where to go. Here are some simple guidelines:

1.) Be realistic – the first step is determining how much time you have to travel, and as important, how much money do you have allocated for your honeymoon. (Using HoneyLuna’s honeymoon registry can give extra cushion to that budget!)

2.) The best way to start your planning may be to choose a list of specific destinations that interest you. Then start reading and researching these places to see if they fit your desires. If there are only beach and water sports and you don’t tan and can’t swim, then it may not be the place for you.

3.) Narrow your choices. The world is big. Even one country is big. You can’t see it all in a lifetime, much less in a week or a few weeks. Most people try to do too much in too little time. You’ll have a much better experience if you can actually take the time to enjoy where you are – instead of being exhausted because you’re running from one city to the next, one country to the next. (This makes for some cranky travelers!)

4.) Choose a place that interests you – not just for the monuments but also for the culture and way of life. Your daily activities and the people you meet have more influence on the quality of your travel experience than the sites you visit or the sights you see.

5.) Make your own choices. Don’t go somewhere just because someone else liked it or told you to go there. See #4 – again, just because a friend enjoyed the trek through the Himalayas in freezing temperatures carrying a 60-pound bag doesn’t mean you will. If you’re idea of roughing it is a 5 star hotel in Tahiti then a river-rafting trip down the Grand Canyon may not be for you!

6.) Think about who is giving you advice and what their knowledge is based on. Have they actually been there or are they experts on this destination? Look for resources from and by people in the places you are thinking of going for the most accurate picture of what travel in those places will really be like.

7.) Travel in the present. Learn about contemporary life and current affairs in the places you are going. (The Internet makes this much easier than ever before.)

8.) And most importantly, be sure that you and your fiancée are on the same page. If you want a week at a luxury hotel with a spa and a swim up bar, and he wants to go to a dude ranch, then you need to talk about that early on and find a way to compromise. (That is what you do in marriage!) Perhaps you can go to Kauai and stay at the Princeville Resort, which has a wonderful spa and is conveniently located by the Princeville Stables!

9.) Once you’ve made your decision, book early! Waiting for those last minute Internet fares is not honeymoon appropriate. The most popular honeymoon destinations such as Tahiti sell out months in advance!

10.) Don’t forget to say “I DO” and go have the honeymoon of your dreams. You should come back from your trip feeling like you’ve just experienced one of the most memorable and enjoyable events of your new life together.
